Fire poses threat to pets lungs too

The heavy pollution resulting from the recent and ongoing fires in the southland pose a risk to people and pets with respiratory problems. Cats with asthma and brachycephalic or snub nosed breed dogs and cats are at risk. Keep your pets inside and keep the a/c running. Change your filters if they have not been changed in the last 90 days. Do not exercise your pets until the air quality improves.
If you pet appears to have labored breathing, bring them in for immediate attention.

Don't underestimate fleas

Fleas can pose a serious threat to your pets! Last week, we lost an 8 pound cat due to flea anemia. Fleas sucked so much blood out of this kitty that she was too weak to resucsiate by the time we saw her. Fleas also carry tapeworms and even the plague bacteria. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you place all of your cats on flea preventive medications. We recommend Frontline plus. It can be applied in a single spot on the back of the neck and will kill fleas for 1 month. It also kills flea eggs so that your environment will not fill up with adult fleas.

Rattlesnakes are Active!

Summer is upon us and Rattlesnakes are becoming very active. We've seen 3 bites already this year. Treatment of rattlesnake bite is difficult and frequently unrewarding. A vaccine is now available to help pets defend themselves against rattlesnake bites. While the vaccine does not guarantee survival of a bitten pet, it will greatly enhance the chances of survival. If you take your dogs hiking in the hills, or you live in the hills where rattlesnakes are present, I strongly encourage you to have your pets immunized.

Stop The Pet Tax

Here is an excerpt from the website PetPac regarding the impending taxation of veterinary services.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced plans to charge sales tax to pet owners for their veterinary services. Sign the petition to stop the tax.

Hawaii, New Mexico, and South Dakota are the only states that tax veterinary medical services, including routine exams and vaccinations, according to the American Veterinary Medical Associations state tax summary report.

Pet owners faced with tough economic times may be forced to forego medical treatment for their pets. Experts believe additional pet costs will result in more pets being relinquished to shelters and more dogs and cats being euthanized.

Taxing pet owners for basic pet medical care is a very bad idea. Governor Schwarzenegger proposes to tax pet owners but has refused to tax movie tickets. We think taxing movie tickets would be a better idea than taxing pet owners.

Help us send a message that our pets medical services should not be taxed. Sign the petition today.

Robbie's Birthday

For those of you who have been following the saga of Robbie's cancer treatment (Dr. Henderson's Irish Setter). He just passed his 13th Birthday! We had a small party for him at the practice and even spoiled him with a little cake. He is doing remarkably well considering all of the problems he's faced. He's beat the text book statistics by passing the one year mark since the diagnosis of his first cancer! Dr. Henderson is enjoying the time she has with him and appreciates the outpouring of concern which has come from our clientele. Thank you all for your support.

Hello Friends and welcome to Alta Rancho Pet & Bird Hospital's community forum. We hope that this message board will be a place where our clients and other pet lovers can exchange information on issues surrounding pet health and care as well as all things pet related.
Feel free to post questions directed to our medical staff or to other members. Do not feel limited in the scope of your entries; they can be observations about your pet, questions about how others are dealing with pet related issues including illness, behavior, grief etc. You can post cute or interesting pictures, tell interesting stories and just let your imagination lead you. In time, my hope is that this board will help connect people with shared interests.
I will be monitoring the board and will attempt to answer all inquiries within 24 hours.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you.
